Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 925 AM EDT Wed Sep 11 2024
SYNOPSIS
Dry weather and warming temperatures are expected for the foreseeable future. A few showers will be possible Thursday night and Friday with the passage of a cold front but those should be light and few and far between. Otherwise, high pressure dominates the weather picture through early next week.
NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/
As of 945 AM... Current satellite imagery shows a stream of light smoke passing over southern New Hampshire, and a few fair weather clouds trying to move into the region from the north and west.
Otherwise high pressure and very stable, dry air is overhead. High pressure and mostly clear skies will allow for heat to build, bringing NH and ME into the 70s today. Forecast is on track, just made some slight tweaks to the temperatures based on most recent observations.
As of 620 AM... Patchy fog continues early this morning over the interior valleys. This moisture should mix out by 12Z in most areas. Otherwise, mostly sunny skies will continue with a significant warm up by afternoon after a chilly start. Daytime highs will reach the 70s in most areas with a sea breeze along the coast this afternoon.
As of 240 AM... Clear skies, light winds and low dew points led to radiational cooling last night along with patchy frost and fog. This same airmass, under a large ridge of high pressure will allow for mainly sunny skies today. Afternoon temperatures will reach the 70s in all areas. A sea breeze will develop along the coast during the afternoon keeping the shoreline cooler.
SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/
High pressure will remain over the region tonight. Patchy fog will once again form over some of the interior, sheltered valleys. A slight uptick in surface dew points will keep temperatures a little warmer than the previous night with readings mainly in the 40s to lower 50s.
High pressure will then shift offshore. This will allow for a return west to southwesterly flow and a warm up. H8 readings near +12C will allow readings to reach near 80s degrees across southern interior sections. Along the coastline, it will be cooler with an afternoon sea breeze. Some cloud cover will cross the region in association with a weak upper air disturbance.
LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/
The long term period still looks quiet as a large mid and upper level high pressure system continues to build over the eastern United States. This will aid in keeping significant moisture well away from New England. Therefore, fair weather with warming temperatures can be expected into early next week. There could be a spot shower or two on Friday with the passage of a weak cold front, but will keep PoPs at slight chance due to the lack of moisture and stronger ascent.
AVIATION /13Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/
Short Term...VFR conditions prevail today, tonight and tomorrow, with nighttime valley fog likely at HIE and LEB once again tonight.
Long Term...Mainly VFR through the end of the week, the weekend, and early next week with vly fog at KLEB/KHIE possible overnights.
MARINE
Short Term...Fair conditions prevail as high pressure remains settled south of the waters.
Long Term...Winds/seas remain below SCA criteria through early next week with high pressure continuing to settle in.
