Updated aviation portion for 12Z TAF issuance

SHORT TERM
Today
Tonight
and Thursday Issued at 226 AM CST Wed Nov 29 2023

Key Messages:

- Warmer temperatures expected across the region today and Thursday.

Forecast Details:

Light snow and flurries will end early this morning behind a departing warm front and clipper system as they exit the western Great Lakes. Behind this warm front warmer temperatures are expected today as skies become mostly sunny later this morning and into the afternoon. Highs today are expected to generally be in the middle to upper 30s.

Southwesterly winds will keep the temperatures warm tonight as clouds stream in ahead of the next low pressure system tracking through the northern Great Lakes. Lows tonight are only expected to fall into the lower 20s across the north, with middle to upper 20s across east-central Wisconsin.

A weak cold front will track through the region on Thursday as the aforementioned low track to the north of the area. The cold front is expected to be weak with very little moisture; therefore, precipitation is not expected and the front will lack a push of appreciably cold air behind it. Highs on Thursday are expected to range from the lower 30s across the north, with middle to upper 30s across central and east-central Wisconsin.

LONG TERM
Thursday Night Through Tuesday Issued at 226 AM CST Wed Nov 29 2023

Key Messages:

- Dry and seasonally warm weather is expected through the end of the work week.

- A system arriving Saturday brings a chance for an area-wide mixed precipitation event Saturday night through Sunday.

- Unsettled pattern continues to start next week as a few disturbances pass over the area keeping a chance for a wintry mix Monday and Tuesday.

Thursday night trough Saturday morning... The combination of upper level zonal flow and surface high pressure will keep the area dry through the end of the work week. Temperatures are expected to trend a few degrees warmer than normal for the end of November with most areas seeing afternoon highs in the low 30s to low 40s.

Saturday afternoon through Sunday...The next round of precipitation is progged to arrive this weekend as an area of broad warm air advection spreads over Wisconsin ahead of an upstream shortwave. The GFS solution has precipitation arriving Saturday evening while the latest ECMWF has most of the precipitation arriving Sunday morning. Areas northwest and west of a Oconto to Waupaca line should see mainly snow as temperates are expected to remain below freezing in this area. Highest accumulations of 1-2" are expected in far north-central WI. Areas in the Fox Valley and along the lakeshore may see more of a wintry mix turning to rain late Sunday morning as temperatures in those areas warm a to a few degrees above freezing.

Monday through the end of the extended period...The unsettled pattern looks to continue into the beginning of next week as a series of upper-level shortwaves pass over Wisconsin. The latest GFS run has a vorticity maximum passing central Wisconsin late Monday which could result in a few hours of light rain/snow across the area. However, the ECMWF has this vorticity maximum further south over IL which would lead to a lower chance for precipitation Monday night into Tuesday morning. A second shortwave passing over the area Tuesday may also bring a few areas of light rain/snow, however, compared to Monday moisture looks limited as the mid and upper levels become much drier. Upper level ridging moving over the area Wednesday should bring a drier pattern for the second-half of next week.

AVIATION
for 12Z TAF Issuance Issued at 523 AM CST Wed Nov 29 2023

Low MVFR/IFR clouds across north-central and northeast Wisconsin will slowly dissipate this morning behind a departing low pressure system with VFR conditions and mostly clear skies expected by midday and lasting into tonight. Further south, mostly clear skies and VFR conditions will prevail during the TAF period.

Surface winds could gust to 15 knots at times today, with light winds expected tonight. Increasing southwest winds off the surface of 30 to 40 knots could lead to LLWS across central and east- central Wisconsin late tonight.

GRB WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
None.
