DISCUSSION
Issued at 305 AM CDT Wed Apr 30 2025

High pressure stretched from Lake Superior into the Midwest and Central Plains early this morning with clear skies across the Upper Midwest. A weak area of low pressure was located along the North Dakota/Saskatchewan border with a cold front trailing into eastern Montana. High pressure will shift to the east today setting up southerly return flow across the region. This will allow temperatures to warm into the 60s over much of the Northland, except across the Arrowhead where winds will be off of Lake Superior. This will keep highs in the 50s with water temperatures still in the middle 30s away from shore.

As the low in North Dakota moves east today, clouds will be on the increase from the west. Showers and perhaps a few rumbles of thunder will spread across northeastern Minnesota through the night. Another area of low pressure will develop over the Southern Plains today and move into Illinois overnight spreading additional cloud cover in from the south. Most of the precipitation from this system will remain to our south, but a few spotty showers cannot be ruled out across northwest Wisconsin overnight. As the shortwave/low pressure moves across the Upper Midwest for Thursday and Thursday night, a band of rain showers will drag from west to east across the entire Northland. Rain chances were increased above the latest NBM guidance as the LREF 29.12Z guidance had robust values of 60-70% Thu eve from the Arrowhead into northwest WI. This agrees well with the 70% probabilities for the band location along the North Shore southward around 7 pm Thu. It is also in good agreement with band placement seen in the 30.00. It is going to rain.
Highs will be cooler with the cloud cover Thursday only reaching into the 50s and lower 60s.

Showers end later Thursday night and into Friday morning as the system clears the region. A bit of rain/snow mix will be possible across the Arrowhead in the hours before sunrise, but little to no accumulations are expected. Total liquid amounts up to around a quarter of an inch will be possible, with amounts closer to 0.50" across the Arrowhead. Highs Friday will be cool behind the system only reaching into the 40s to middle 50s.

Heading into the weekend, an upper level ridge will build into the region bringing mainly sunny and dry conditions and much warmer temperatures. Highs Saturday will reach into the 60s for most with the middle 70s arriving for Sunday and Monday.
However, with onshore winds along the North Shore, temperatures there will trend cooler only reaching the 50s and 60s. Winds look lighter on Monday across the region, so the North Shore should have a better opportunity to warm into the 60s.

AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z THURSDAY/
Issued at 305 AM CDT Wed Apr 30 2025

VFR conditions are expected across the area for much of the period. Further northwest toward the Canadian border, some MVFR ceilings are going to be found as a cold front begins to slowly move southeast. The MVFR ceilings make their way into the KINL TAF possibly by Wednesday eve. Winds will turn southerly during the daytime hours today with speeds increasing to 10-15 knots and gusts to 20-25 knots by the afternoon.

MARINE /FOR NEAR SHORE WATERS OF WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR/
Issued at 305 AM CDT Wed Apr 30 2025

Southerly winds will prevail across western Lake Superior today and tonight and remain under 15 knots. Winds Thursday will become northeasterly at 5 to 15 knots with a few gusts to around 20 knots possible along the North Shore and linger through Thursday night. Winds will then remain around 15 knots or less through the weekend with a few gusts to 20 knots possible Sunday afternoon in the Grand Marais to Grand Portage area. Some showers will be possible Wednesday night through Friday morning, but no storms are expected. Waves will remain under 2 feet through the remainder of the week and into the weekend.
