Synopsis for the northern and central washington coastal and inland waters..A broad surface ridge will remain centered over the coastal and offshore waters through midweek. Thermally induced low pressure will expand northward along the coast on Thursday before shifting inland this weekend.

UPDATE
Widespread stratus this morning across Western Washington with abundant moisture at the surface. Areas of drizzle or light rain cannot be ruled out today, primarily in the Cascades. Clearing will likely be limited into this afternoon with some sunshine in spots late afternoon and evening.

SYNOPSIS
Upper ridge located offshore will build over Western Washington today and Wednesday. Light low level flow will keep moisture near the surface through Wednesday resulting in times of drizzle or light showers. Increasing northerly and offshore flow into Thursday. A warmer, drier pattern Thursday into the weekend.
A more active pattern early next week.

SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY/
Satellite imagery shows cloudy skies over most of Western Washington this morning. Small clear spot along the north coast. Light drizzle being reported in a couple of locations with Seattle and Everett reporting visibility a half mile or less in fog. Temperatures with the cloud cover were in a narrow range in the mid 50s.

Upper level ridge centered offshore building over Western Washington today through Wednesday. Low level flow remaining light northerly through the period making it hard to scour out the low level moisture especially since we have reached that time of year where the night is longer than the day and the strength of the sun is waning. The weak upper level ridging over the area will compress the low level moisture resulting in drizzle or light showers at times. The ridging and sunshine will thin the layer out in the afternoon with a few breaks in the overcast but what areas that do clear will fill in quickly tonight either with a low cloud deck or fogging in as the low level flow remains light. Not much diurnal spread in the temperatures with the cloud cover with high temperatures only about 5 degrees warmer than the current temperatures, a couple of degrees either side of 60. Lows tonight in the 50s with highs Wednesday a couple of degrees warmer than today.

Low level northerly flow increasing Wednesday night with the low level flow turning offshore Thursday as a thermally induced surface troughy moves up the coastline. The offshore flow will dry out the low levels giving the area more sunshine and warmer high temperatures, mid 60s to lower 70s.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/
Extended models in good agreement with the low level offshore flow pattern continuing Friday and Saturday. Upper level ridge axis moving right over Western Washington with 500 mb heights approaching 590 dms Friday.
This combination will push high temperatures well above normal.
Possible record highs along the coast Saturday. Not expecting any record highs over the interior but forecast highs Saturday will only be a couple of degrees short of records set in some locations last year.

Upper level ridge starts drift east Saturday and by Sunday the ridge axis is well east of the area and the thermally induced trough has shifted inland. Western Washington still on the backside of the ridge but with the end of the offshore flow high temperatures will cool about 5 degrees over the interior and 10 degrees or so along the coast.

Next system arriving Monday. This system will slightly tap into the sub tropics which will add some extra moisture. Deep upper level trough behind the front will be digging south Monday which will slow down and try to split the system apart. High temperatures will drop back down into the lower to mid 60s. Felton

AVIATION
Broad upper ridge centered well offshore today will produce northwest flow aloft over Western Washington. Residual low level moisture and light surface winds has lead to widespread IFR and pockets of LIFR early this morning. Brief improvements to MVFR/VFR have been noted across area terminals this morning.
Ceilings may continue to lift through late this afternoon, but with light winds and low-level surface moisture, can largely expect low clouds to stay around through the evening, Ceilings sink back down to IFR across much of the region once again tonight, with another chance of fog, especially into the overnight and into Wednesday morning.

KSEA...LIFR/IFR conditions have slightly given way to a more scattered MVFR ceiling this morning. Ceilings may continue to improve into the afternoon, with the more likely chance that low clouds will mainly stay around, with a 50 to 70 percent chance of low MVFR clouds staying through the late afternoon. Low clouds will become more consolidated after 03z as another round of lower ceilings (40% chance of IFR) will develop overnight into Wednesday morning. N/NE winds this morning generally around 4 to 8 knots will turn to W/SW around 20z.

A broad surface ridge will remain centered over the coastal and offshore waters through midweek with winds across area waters generally remaining under small craft advisory levels.
Thermally induced low pressure will expand northward along the coast on Thursday producing northerly or light offshore flow. The thermal trough will shift inland this weekend. 27

No river flooding is expected through the next seven days.
