Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 539 AM AKST Sat Dec 2 2023

SHORT TERM
/Through Tonight/...A weakening low in the SE Gulf will continue to weaken while diving southeastward toward the Dixon Entrance where it will totally weaken and get absorbed into the overall synoptic flow this afternoon. This keeps a chance of showers and increased clouds for the southern Panhandle through the day today. A Gale-force frontal system moves into the SE Gulf and into the southern Panhandle during the overnight hours tonight and into Sunday morning, which will, once again, greatly increase chances for rain and breezy/gusty conditions. Up to around 40 kt Gales for the eastern Gulf waters and up to 25-30 kt Small Craft conditions for the southern Inner Channels and near ocean entrances. For the northern third of the Panhandle, expect mainly dry conditions with mainly partly cloudy skies through the period as that area will remain under the control of an area of high pressure centered to the north over the Canadian Yukon region.

LONG TERM
/Sunday through Friday/...We will see a brief break across the area for the end of Sunday before the unsettled pattern returns to SE AK. The next front starts to move into the southern panhandle Monday morning. Deterministic guidance continues to show this front bringing gale force winds to the area. GFS guidance wants to bring in storm force winds with this front but remains the only model at the time of writing with that solution.
Some areas across the northern panhandle are likely to see more of a rain/snow mix or straight snow, especially places like Lynn canal and Juneau for a period of time. The snow will switch to more rain though as the warmer air surges northward through the inner channels. For accumulating snow, the best places to see accumulating snow is likely going to be for the N Lynn Canal areas. There is the possibility that advisory level snow amounts could be achieved from this system. The biggest question though is how fast does the warm air surge north up Lynn canal and limit accumulations. This will be the main thing to watch for with regards to snow accumulations for the start of next week.

Behind this front, the low remains parked over the far northern edge of the gulf allowing for more onshore flow to continue for the middle to end of the week. This onshore flow will bring an unsettled pattern to the area.

AVIATION
/Until 12Z Sunday/...A small feature will bring diminishing showers to the central panhandle through the early morning hours, though VFR conditions will continue to dominate throughout the rest of the day Saturday across SE AK. Ketchikan in the south will be the only exception as it has maintained MVFR ceilings with a better chance to break out later in the afternoon. Otherwise the next system will move into the southern Gulf late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Overall MVFR conditions coupled with LLWS is expected to progress northward through the southern panhandle beginning early Sunday with lowered ceilings and possible VIS impacts with precipitation.
