SYNOPSIS
Isolated showers and seasonal temperatures across the state with northeasterly and easterly winds increasing across the region Wednesday. Easterly winds increase along the northeast Arctic Coast Friday as another band of rain approaches the West Coast.
KEY WEATHER MESSAGES
Central and Eastern Interior...
-Northeast winds increase across the Yukon Flats and Interior Summits through Wednesday. Winds peak Wednesday evening with gusts up to 30 mph along highway summits. Winds may mix down into the valleys with gusts 20 to 25 mph possible Wednesday evening.
NE winds remain elevated through the end of the week.
-Temperatures remain steady through the end of the week with highs in the 40s to near 50 and lows dipping down below freezing in most places.
-Isolated rain showers possible in the afternoon. Showers will fall as snow in elevated terrain with low to no accumulations.
Showers become more numerous Thursday in the eastern Interior.
West Coast and Western Interior...
-North and Northeasterly winds increase along the West Coast Wednesday and Thursday to sustained speeds of 10 to 20 mph.
Kivalina and Red Dog Dock may see stronger winds with gusts up to 35 mph possible. Sustained northerly winds through the Bering Strait and across western St. Lawrence Island will be stronger with sustained speeds of 20 to 25 mph peaking Friday evening with gusts up to 35 mph.
-Showers remain isolated along the West Coast and Western Interior through Thursday before a front brings a band of rain to the YK Delta and lower Yukon Valley Friday and moving up the coast through the weekend.
North Slope and Brooks Range..
-Northeasterly winds 10 to 15 mph increase to 20 mph Wednesday.
Winds will be stronger on the northwestern coast from Point Lay to Point Hope with sustained speeds reaching 20 mph Tuesday and up to 30 mph Wednesday. Easterly winds along the eastern Arctic increase quickly overnight Thursday from near 20 mph to 30 to 35 mph with gusts 40 to 45 mph by Friday afternoon. These decrease slightly to gusts up to 35 mph on Saturday.
FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION
Weak ridging over the area ends today as several upper level lows converge over Alaska and the Bering Sea creating a very broad trough of low pressure aloft. A strong Arctic high moves from the eastern Siberian Coast north and east into the high Arctic. These two features will create the stronger east and northeast winds that we'll be seeing during the latter half of the week. Model confidence is good on the overall pattern, but has moderate confidence in the smaller details. No particularly hazardous weather is anticipated however.
.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...
The broad troughing shifts further west into the Bering Sea as ridging attempts to reestablish itself over the Alaskan mainland early next week. This will bring slightly warmer temperatures to the Interior Sunday and Monday before the ridge breaks down again with additional rain showers next Tuesday.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None
