Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 124 PM AKST Sun Jan 12 2025
SYNOPSIS
Strong chinook continues over the Interior, as well as strong southerly winds in the Alaska Range Passes. Some of that wind could reach the Fairbanks area on Sunday as well as record high temperatures. Low pressure system still impacting the west coast through Monday. This storm will bring heavy snow to portions of the Nulato Hills and the Seward Penn. Chances for snow increase over the Interior Monday into Tuesday.
DISCUSSION
Key Messages:
Central and Eastern Interior...
- Temperatures well above average through Sunday. The Central Interior could see highs in the 40s above on Sunday and near 50 in the Alaska Range. Temps stay above normal on Monday then decrease through mid week.
- Wind advisories are in effect for the Alaska Range for Saturday and High Wind Warnings are also in effect for Sunday for even stronger winds with possible gusts near 80 mph.
- Some of these winds are expected to make it to the Fairbanks area with gusts of 25 to 40 mph being possible. Wind advisories are still in effect for the Fairbanks area for Sunday afternoon and evening.
- Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for gusty winds and blowing snow for the Dalton Highway Summits and towards Eagle Summit along the Steese Highway for Sunday. South facing slopes of the Alaska Range will see snow and blowing snow with accumulations of 6 to 12 inches over the weekend.
- Chance for snow showers increase over the Interior Monday and Tuesday as some moisture makes it way into the Interior.
Accumulations around 1 to 3 inches possible over the E Interior.
North Slope and Brooks Range...
* Light to moderate snowfall will be possible for the Western North Slope into Sunday as a system crosses the Bering Sea, with heavier snow possible late Sunday into Monday with another system. Snow and blowing snow expected in the Brooks Range and along the Dalton Highway on Sunday. Strong southerly gusts to 40 mph are possible Sunday into Monday.
- Winter weather advisories have been issued for the W Arctic to Utqiagvik Sunday evening through Sunday night for blowing snow.
West Coast and Western Interior...
* Second low pressure system will bring even heavier snow to the west coast and inland areas Sunday into Monday. Winter Storm Warnings remain for the Seward Penn, with the heaviest snow on Sunday. As well as warnings for the Nulato Hills for 6 to 12 inches of snow. Winter Weather Advisories still in effect for snow and blowing snow through tonight.
- Strong cold front will bring gales into Norton Sound and the YK Delta from the west, Sunday afternoon into Monday. While ice is in place, projected water levels of 1 to 2 feet above the normal high tideline may push pieces of sea ice onto the shore as well as push water through open leads, causing localized near shore water over ice.
Analysis and Forecast Confidence...
Strong Chinook flow continues over the Interior. Gusty south winds in the 70 to 80 mph range for Sunday. High Wind Warnings are in place for Sunday. Record high temperatures are also possible with the strong warm downsloping. Continued warm on Monday, then turning colder. Upper level flow turns more southwestly on Monday and Tuesday and the upper level low over the Seward Penn will track Northeast over the Brooks Range Tuesday and Wed. Snow could develop over the Interior as some moisture pushes across the area from the southwest. Colder air will filter back into the Interior through the week as ridging builds over the Interior.
Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
A chance for snow will occur over the SE Interior with a system moving from the Gulf into the SE Interior and E Alaska Range. Cooler temps and troughing with weak high pressure will develop later on Thursday with a chance for stormy weather to return to SW AK by Friday. Chinook flow could return to the Interior with warmer temps and windy conditions over the Alaska Range for next weekend.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...See SPS for the West Coast for coastal hazard details.
