SYNOPSIS
From Point Hope to the Bering Strait to St Lawrence Is and south, strong north winds will cause snow squalls with periods of very low visibility through Saturday. The winds combined with temperatures in the teens will cause freezing spray to accumulate into a light glaze at Wales, Diomede and Savoonga through Saturday. Winds are expected to decrease Saturday afternoon and blowing snow and freezing spray will diminish then. Gale force north winds are expected to return Sunday night and continue into Wednesday which will bring a return to snow squalls and blowing snow with low visibility, along with freezing spray.
A band of snow showers, and strong north winds from Point Hope to the Bering Strait to St Lawrence Is and south will persist into Mon, and possibly through next Wed. Temperatures will remain in the teens in those areas this weekend into next week causing freezing spray to blow onto north facing shores and causing a light glaze of ice to form at Diomede, Wales and Savoonga. Winds will decrease to 20 to 30 mph Sat PM through Sun PM, but will increase to gale force again by Mon with a return of .
Light snow over the remainder of the West Coast will move over the Seward Pen tonight then diminish to flurries on Sat before clearing on Sun. Areas of the West Coast that clear out will cool to well below normal this weekend, with temps falling to 10 below to 10 above this weekend.
The Arctic Coast has stratus, fog and flurries that will continue through the weekend. The area from Nuiqsut east will have light snow on Sat into Sun. Temps will cool to 10 below to 10 above this weekend over the Arctic Coast.
The Interior has a band of light snow moving north over it today, that will linger over the Northern Interior into Sat, then diminish to flurries Sat night. The southern Interior will see decreasing clouds tonight and Sat, and remain partly cloudy Sat night into Sun, while the Northern Interior clears on Sun.
The Interior will cool to well below normal this weekend as conditions clear out, with temps falling into the 20s to 30 below range in clear areas of the Interior by Sat night or Sun morning.
Strong east winds will develop near Delta Junction and over Dalton Highway Summits Sun night along with blowing snow. Southerly winds will increase through Alaska Range Passes Sun night, then diminish on Mon and allow snow to develop over much of the Interior by Mon.
The Interior will warm to near normal temperatures with periods of snow next week.
Aloft...
The long wave pattern consists of a deep trough over Alaska with a ridge over Western Canada and another ridge over Eastern Russia.
This pattern will remain stationary through the middle of next week. A series of short wave troughs will move north over Mainland Alaska through next week. Most of the short waves will have snow associated with them. This pattern will also cause persistent northerly flow over the Northern Bering Sea which will cause a band of lake affect type snow showers and squalls to persist from Point Hope to the Bering Strait to St Lawrence Is through next Wed.
The first short wave that lies from Nome to Northway will move to Nome to Circle by 3am Sat, to Nome to Old Crow by 3pm Sat, and then split apart on Sat night. A second and stronger
A second and stronger short wave will move over the Western Gulf of AK on Sun, over the AK Range on Sun night, and from McGrath to Old Crow on Sun PM.
Surface...
A 1011 mb low 300 NM north of Deadhorse will move northeast.
A 996 mb low near Cape Romanzof will move to near Cape Newenham as a 999 mb low by 3pm Sat, then continue moving southeast. There will be scattered snow showers over the SW Interior and YK Delta near the low center tonight.
A weather front stretching from this low to Nome to Eagle will move to Nome to Old Crow by 3am Sat, to Nome to Arctic Village to a 1009 mb low near Inuvik by 3pm Sat, then weaken in place through Sun. Light snow along and north of this front from the Seward Pen east across the Interior will move over the Northern Interior and Seward Pen tonight, then over NE Alaska on Sat with snow diminishing to flurries over the Northern Interior and Seward Pen on Sat. Snow will diminish to flurries over NE AK on Sat night and Sun. Will see about 1 inch over the southern Interior with this today, 1-3 inches across the Northern Interior tonight into Sat, and less than 1 inch over the Seward Pen today through Sat.
The southern Interior will see decreasing clouds tonight and Sat south of the front, and remain partly cloudy Sat night into Sun, while the Northern Interior and West Coast clear on Sun. The Interior will cool to well below normal this weekend as conditions clear out, with temps falling into the 20s to 30 below range in clear areas of the Interior by Sat night or Sun morning.
A strong low will move north over the Alaska Peninsula on Sun, and then move northeast over the Eastern Interior on Sun. This will cause strong east winds to develop near Delta Junction and over Dalton Highway Summits Sun night along with blowing snow.
Southerly chinook winds will develop over the Alaska Range Sun night, then diminish on Mon. As the low moves over the Interior on Mon, the chinook winds will weaken and allow snow to develop over much of the Interior by Mon with 2-4 inches of snow possible Mon.
A band of snow showers from Point Hope to the Bering Strait to St Lawrence Is and south will persist into Mon, and possibly through next Wed. Expect 1-4 inches of snow each day with the heaviest amounts over St Lawrence Is. Strong north winds in this area will decrease to 20 to 30 mph on Saturday PM, and remain that speed into Sun PM, before increasing back to gale force on Monday then remaining strong into Wed.
DISCUSSION
Models initialize well at 12Z aloft and show similar solutions aloft through 3pm Sat, then the GFS and ECMWF show good agreement for Sat night into early next week, while the NAM and Canadian models diverge somewhat from the GFS and ECMWF on features aloft.
Due to their better agreement, favor the GFS and ECMWF for features aloft into early next week.
Start to see southerly chinook winds develop across the Alaska Range Sun late afternoon or evening and continue through early Mon before turning SW and dropping off during the day Mon.
850 mb temperatures drop to of -10C to -20C drop to -14C to -24C by Sat with the coldest air northwest of the Yukon River. These temps will persist into Sun, then see warming from the SE Sun night into Mon. This will allow areas that have cleared out to drop to well below normal this weekend, with temps falling into the 20s to 30 below range in clear areas of the Interior by Sat night, while the West Coast and Arctic Coasts fall to 10 below to 10 above this weekend.
With precipitation models show similar solutions through 3pm Sat, then slight differences Sat night into Mon. Will use a blend of models for precip through 3pm Sat, then a blend of the GFS and ECMWF precip for Sat night into Mon. Highlights include: Light snow across the Interior and Seward Pen that will move over the Northern Interior and Seward Pen tonight, then over NE Alaska on Sat with snow diminishing to flurries over the Northern Interior and Seward Pen on Sat. Snow will diminish to flurries over NE AK on Sat night and Sun. Will see about 1 inch over the southern Interior with this today, 1-3 inches across the Northern Interior tonight into Sat, and less than 1 inch over the Seward Pen today through Sat. A band of snow showers from Point Hope to the Bering Strait to St Lawrence Is and south will persist into Mon, and possibly through next Wed. Expect 1-4 inches of snow each day with the heaviest amounts over St Lawrence Is. A broad areas of snow is likely over the Southern and Eastern Interior on Mon with 2-4 inches possible Mon.
At the surface at 18Z, models verify well on most features. Models show similar solutions at the surface through 3pm Sat, then the GFS and ECMWF maintain similar solutions into Mon while the NAM diverges some. Will use a blend of the GFS and ECMWF at the surface through Mon. Highlights include, Northerly gales from Point Hope to the Bering Strait to St Lawrence Is and south decreasing to 25 kt on Sat PM remaining about 25 kt into Sun, then increasing to gales again by Mon that continue into Wed.
Northeast winds increasing across the Interior Sun night and Mon in areas prone to E or NE Winds, with gusts 30-40 mph in windier areas such as Delta Junction, Finger Mountain, and the Lower Yukon River. South winds increasing to 40-50 mph through Alaska Range Passes Sun night into Mon AM.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
Northerly gales will cause high waves from Point Hope to the Bering Strait to St Lawrence Island Mon through Wed. This combined with temperatures in the teens will cause freezing spray in the Bering Strait, at Diomede and North Side of St Lawrence Is near Savoonga Sun night through Wed.
