Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 155 PM AKST Fri Dec 1 2023
SYNOPSIS
Benign weather pattern is developing and will persist for the next several days. Colder (note, closer to normal) temps will develop over the Interior with partial clearing skies and temps aloft cooling.
DISCUSSION
Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a 509 dam arctic trough centered over the YK Delta. There is a weak 516 dam shortwave trough rotating slowly westward from the Yukon Territory. There is a 516 dam shortwave trough lifting north of Utqiagvik. There is a 507 dam upper low over the Gulf of AK with an associated 972 mb low. There is a 995 mb low near Wainright along the Chukchi coast.
Model Discussion...
Models are in very good agreement with no significant discrepancies. A blend of models was favored for precip, NAM Nest for winds, and MOS guidance for temps, which we cooled quite a bit for the Interior.
Central and Eastern Interior...
Colder temps finally settle in with mostly clear skies over much of the Interior into the weekend. Valley temps will be pushing to near -20 below in most places by Saturday night with highs remaining below zero. The Tanana Valley Jet will continue to keep areas by Delta Junction slightly warmer. Clouds increase Monday with stronger northeast winds over the Interior hills forming, and temps also rebounding slightly due to air mixing aloft from winds.
North Slope and Brooks Range...
Light offshore winds today switch back to easterly winds tonight and will then continue all the way into Monday, strongest over the Chukchi Coast and lightest farther eastward. Expect some minor blowing snow around Point Lay to Wainright, otherwise, impacts are minimal with mostly periods of stratus, fog and flurries.
West Coast and Western Interior...
A low is moving into Kotzebue Sound and Norton Sound, with light snow accompanying it. Overnight, the low will shift offshore. The arctic front, however, will remain stalled over the W Interior and will continue the chance for snow through Monday, with general snow showers over the Bering Strait. Blustery north winds down the Bering Strait wane tonight, with benign weather mostly settling in for the weekend.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...A low is projected to track into the N Bering Sea from the Sea oh Okhotsk sometime Wednesday and then move inland Thursday into Friday. However, the current track looks like it will bring the highest seas/surge into Bristol Bay. Minor elevated water levels are still possible from the YK Delta to Norton Sound.
