Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 148 PM AKST Thu Nov 30 2023
SYNOPSIS
Moderate southerly chinook winds will continue across the Alaska Range this afternoon and continue into this evening then decrease late tonight. This will cause temperatures across most of Northern Alaska to remain well above normal through Fri. The Interior will cool closer to normal over the weekend, while the West Coast and Arctic Coast will remain above normal into early next week due to the open water in those areas.
DISCUSSION
Aloft...
The long wave pattern consists of a deep trough over Eastern Russia and the Bering Sea. A series of strong short wave troughs will rotate around the long wave trough and move north across Alaska. These short waves will gradually erode the long wave ridge and pull the long wave trough east over AK this weekend. This will cause cooling this weekend over Northern AK.
Surface...
A weather front stretching from this low east to Demarcation Point will move north of the eastern Arctic Coast of Alaska today, remain north of the Coast through Fri, then move back south along the eastern Arctic Coast on Fri night and Sat. These features are causing areas of freezing fog over the Arctic Coast that will improve over the Eastern Arctic Coast this afternoon as winds turn southerly, while fog will continue over the Western Arctic Coast into Fri. Fog will move back over the Eastern Arctic Fri night as the front moves back south over the coast.
Interior...Wind advisories still in effect for Delta Junction south as southeast winds gusting 30 to 40 mph at Delta Junction will continue into this evening. South winds gusting to 60 mph through Alaska Range Passes will develop later this morning and continue into this evening.
Winter weather advisory still in effect for east winds gusting 30 to 40 mph over Dalton Highway Summits between the Yukon River and Coldfoot will continue into this afternoon and cause reduced visibility in blowing snow. These winds will decrease this evening and visibility will improve. Another warm day for the Interior with highs near 20 degrees. Turning colder Friday into the weekend with low temps dipping below zero over the weekend.
west coast...A shortwave will lift to the north and snow will develop this afternoon over the Northern and West Interior and then over the West Coast and Western North Slope tonight and Fri.
2 to 3 inches of snow possible through Friday over the west coast inland areas. 1 to 2 inches over Northwest Alaska. Areas of fog and stratus and low ceilings will persist over the Bering Strait through the Saturday.
North slope...A weak trough will lift across the north slope but not much in the way of precip, except some snow showers in the Brooks Range. There is also patchy dense freezing fog and possibly freezing drizzle over the eastern north slope through tonight.
Areas of 1/4 SM visibility expected as well. Visibility could improve slightly as winds shift southerly this evening. Low single digits for highs and 5 below zero at night in some areas through the weekend.
Extended forecast...Looking into next week, troughing will persist and unsettled weather will continue over the west coast while weak southerly flow remains over the Interior. Surface temps will stay cold. 850 temps progged to drop to 15 to 20 below over the Interior and northern Interior.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
