Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Jacksonville FL 126 AM EST Sun Dec 8 2024

New NEAR TERM, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, MARINE

NEAR TERM
(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 116 AM EST Sun Dec 8 2024

For the latest NE FL and SE GA Daily Key Messages please visit: https:// www.weather.gov/media/jax/briefings/nws-jax-briefing.pdf

Early this morning...Still on track for light Freeze and widespread Frost across inland areas this morning with lows in the lower 30s, while lows will be closer to 40F along the Atlantic Coast. Slow increase of high clouds towards sunrise but should not impact any of the radiational cooling ongoing at the moment.

Today...High pressure remains over the region at the surface with light and variable winds at 5-10 mph, while high clouds will increase aloft through the afternoon hours, but likely not thick enough to prevent temps from getting back closer to normal values with highs in the mid/upper 60s SE GA and around 70F across NE FL.

Tonight...High pressure pushes off the Atlantic Coast at the surface and light south winds around 5 mph develop and will lead to milder overnight temps as high clouds continue to become more prevalent and will lead to partly to mostly cloudy skies towards morning. Lows will be around 10-15 degrees milder with lows in the mid/upper 40s inland and lower 50s along the Atlantic Coast.

SHORT TERM
(Monday through Tuesday night)
Issued at 116 AM EST Sun Dec 8 2024

High pressure will continue to move off to the east Monday, as upper wave moves across southeastern US. Much of this upper energy will remain to the northwest of the area through the day, but a few showers could get into far inland SE GA. The high will continue to drift away to the east Monday night through Tuesday, with the upper energy largely remaining to the northwest of area. Again, looks like precipitation chances Monday night into Tuesday will be confined to inland SE GA.

On Tuesday night, cold front will move into SE GA. Shower chances will increase across the area through the night, with the greatest chance inland.

Temperatures will trend above normal this period.

LONG TERM
(Wednesday through Saturday)
Issued at 116 AM EST Sun Dec 8 2024

The cold front will move southeast across the area, largely clearing to the southeast by early afternoon. Subsidence behind the front will lead to drying conditions from northwest to southeast during the afternoon hours. A few thunderstorms will be possible with frontal passage.

Temperatures will likely be non diurnal Wednesday, given timing of the front, with highs earlier in the day.

High pressure will build from the west northwest Wednesday night through Thursday. Below normal temperatures for Wednesday night and Thursday. An inland Frost with light Freeze expected inland Wednesday night.

The high will build more toward the north northeast late in the week, setting up a period of onshore flow that will continue into the weekend. Inverted trough may develop in this onshore flow pattern leading to potential for coastal showers by Saturday. This potential is too low to mention at this point, but will be monitored through the week. Temperatures will be a little below normal Thursday night and Friday, then closer to normal Friday night and Saturday. Another inland Frost with light Freeze possible Thursday night.

AVIATION
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 1109 PM EST Sat Dec 7 2024

Strong inversion setting up tonight with near calm winds at the surface and this will set up the possibility of some MVFR vsbys at inland TAF sites, especially at VQQ through sunrise. Otherwise increasing high clouds through the rest of the period with light and variable winds of 5 knots or less at all TAF sites.

MARINE
Issued at 116 AM EST Sun Dec 8 2024

Light and variable winds 10 knots or less with High pressure in place today and Monday will become south and increase to Small Craft Advisory levels ahead of the next frontal boundary late Tuesday through Wednesday, then will continue near SCA levels behind the frontal passage from the Northwest Wednesday Night and from the North on Thursday.

Rip Currents: Lingering Moderate Risk of rip currents with surf/breakers 2-3 ft today, then becoming Low risk on Monday/Tuesday with surf/breakers of 1-2 ft and offshore flow.
