New UPDATE

UPDATE
Issued at 947 AM EST Sat Dec 7 2024

For the latest NE FL and SE GA Daily Key Messages please visit: https:// www.weather.gov/media/jax/briefings/nws-jax-briefing.pdf

Sunny skies has allowed temperatures to rise above freezing this morning and therefore the Freeze Warning has been allowed to expire. High pressure will slide southeast towards the area today with light northerly winds 5-10 mph and only a few high thin cirrus at times. Despite the abundant sunshine, the cold airmass and lingering cold air advection will limit highs to the mid to upper 50s over SE GA, around 60 along I-10, lows 60s south of I-10 and mid 60s over portions of north central FL/ souther St Johns river basin.

Tonight, the Freeze Watch remains in effect for late this evening and early Sunday morning for all of SE GA and most inland areas of NE FL west of highway 301 (except Marion county in north central FL) where a light freeze potential is in play as lows currently forecasted to fall at or below freezing as high pressure will be directly over the area. Calm winds expected away from the coast under the high with light northerly winds along the coast. The calm winds will help support widespread frost for SE GA and much of inland NE FL with areas of frost east of highway 301 to US-17 with patchy frost even along the St Johns river and near I-95 south of Jacksonville.

NEAR TERM
(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 110 AM EST Sat Dec 7 2024

For the latest NE FL and SE GA Daily Key Messages please visit: https:// www.weather.gov/media/jax/briefings/nws-jax-briefing.pdf

Early this morning...Cold temps over inland areas still on track with hard freeze and lows in the middle 20s over inland SE GA by sunrise with a light/medium freeze over Coastal SE GA and the most of inland NE FL with lows in the upper 20s/lower 30s along and west of the US 301 corridor of NE FL. Elevated North winds around 10 mph closer to the Atlantic Coast will keep low temps above freezing and from the middle 30s to lower 40s along the St. Johns River Basin and Atlantic beachfront locations.

Today...Following a cold start expect high pressure to build over the region with light and variable winds and Mostly Sunny skies with a few high clouds from time to time, but Max temps still remaining below normal with highs in the mid/upper 50s for SE GA and into the lower/middle 60s for NE FL.

Tonight...High pressure sets up directly overhead with excellent radiational cooling conditions and expect temps to fall below MOS guidance with widespread lower to middle 30s expected over inland areas and the next package will likely need to issue Frost Advisories for most inland areas as winds become near calm, along with a brief light freeze possible around sunrise, so will issue a Freeze Watch for the same area as the Warning that is in place right now. Lows expected in the mid/upper 30s to lower 40s along the Atlantic Coast and St. Johns River Basin with patchy/areas of Frost expected.

SHORT TERM
(Sunday through Monday night)
Issued at 110 AM EST Sat Dec 7 2024

High pressure ridge will be centered over region Sunday morning, then become centered more to the the east Sunday afternoon. The high will remain centered to the east through Monday night, as upper waves move northeast across the southeastern US. At this time expect rain showers associated with these waves to remain to the northwest through Monday, before affecting inland SE GA Monday night.

Temperatures will trend near normal Sunday and Sunday night, then with the flow coming more from the south/southwest temperatures will be above normal.

LONG TERM
(Tuesday through Friday)
Issued at 110 AM EST Sat Dec 7 2024

The high will continue to move away to the east Tuesday, as a cold front moves southeast into the eastern US. The best chance for showers will be well inland Tuesday, due to ridging over eastern counties. The front will move across overnight Tuesday night through the day on Wednesday. With moisture and convergence pooling along the front, scattered to numerous showers are expected. Could be enough instability for a few thunderstorms with passage Wednesday, but if front comes into region any faster would not have enough time for airmass to destabilize. Could be a few lingering showers on the back side of the front into Wednesday evening, but this will be limited as should be pretty good subsidence behind this boundary.
High pressure will then build from the west northwest Wednesday night. The high is expected to become centered just to the north Thursday through Friday.

Temperatures will continue above normal Tuesday into Tuesday night.
Depending on frontal timing Wednesday could be another above normal day, or have a morning peak with steady to falling temperatures. The latest guidance favors the cooler scenario. Below normal readings for Wednesday night through Friday. Inland frost/light freeze possible Wednesday night and Thursday night.

AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 505 AM EST Sat Dec 7 2024

VFR with SCT high clouds at times today with North to Northeast winds in the 6-9 knot range. Winds become calm after sunset (00Z)
with mainly VFR conds continuing with a few high clouds from time to time. The usual MVFR fog will likely develop at VQQ after 06Z.

MARINE
Issued at 110 AM EST Sat Dec 7 2024

SCEC headlines this morning with North winds 15-20 knots that will become Northeast through the day and decrease to 10-15 knots as high pressure builds over the region with no headlines expected through Monday. South to Southwest flow increases ahead of the next frontal boundary on Tuesday through early Wednesday with potential for another round of SCA headlines, mainly expected over the offshore waters. SCA headlines will continue with the next frontal passage late Wednesday and continuing into Thursday as flow becomes North to Northeast once again.

Rip Currents: Moderate risk of rip currents as flow becomes onshore/Northeast today but weakens to 10-15 knots, along with surf/breakers of 2-4 ft then becomes low to moderate risk on Sunday as flow becomes light/variable with surf/breakers of 1-2 feet.
