New AVIATION

SHORT TERM
(Today through Sunday)
Issued at 155 AM CDT Sat Jul 27 2024

The mid and upper level shear axis is forecast to move west of the I- 35 corridor today. A deeper (925-700mb) southerly flow is forecast to bring the 2"+ precipitable water airmass farther inland this morning compared to the past two days, encroaching west to near the I-35 corridor. Scattered shower activity is forecast through the morning hours across the Coastal Plains with isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms developing late morning through the afternoon hours farther inland, potentially along portions of the I-35 corridor and into the Hill Country. This activity is forecast to diminish temporarily after sunset.

Tonight, the parent upper level low centered over northeast Oklahoma lifts northeast, while an inverted upper level trough pinches off across Coahulia, Rio Grande Plains, and southern Edwards Plateau.
This inverted trough is forecast to lift northwest Sunday into Sunday night. The 925-700mb southern flow strengthens further, with the 2"+ precipitable water airmass expected to move west through the I-35 corridor and into the portions of the Rio Grande Plains.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms should re-develop overnight and then develop and expand in coverage inland late Sunday morning through the afternoon hours.

Where showers develop today and Sunday, average rainfall amounts around 1/10 to 1/4 inch will be common, with isolated pockets 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches possible. High temperatures today are forecast to range from the mid to upper 80s across the Hill Country, I-35 corridor, and Coastal Plains to mid 90s along the Rio Grande. Slightly warmer temperatures are forecast Sunday across central and eastern areas.

LONG TERM
(Sunday night through Friday)
Issued at 155 AM CDT Sat Jul 27 2024

A few showers and thunderstorms are possible Sunday night. This is due to proximity to the upper level trough as it moves away from our area and a moist airmass with PWs of 1.4 to 2 inches.

Subtropical ridge is the dominant feature next week. A subsident and drier airmass with PWs of 1 to 1.6 inches takes hold with no chances of rain, expect for a shower or two mainly near the Coastal Plains.
Abundant afternoon sunshine allows for typical daytime temperatures for late July into early August. Lingering moist soils from the recent rains make mixing with the drier air aloft less efficient resulting in elevated afternoon heat indices.

AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 647 AM CDT Sat Jul 27 2024

Areas of stratus this morning were producing a mix of IFR and MVFR ceilings. The stratus is forecast to become scattered around midday, with VFR conditions thereafter for the remainder of the afternoon and early evening, outside of any SHRA activity. Scattered SHRA activity early this morning is located primarily east of I-35 and I-37 and will persists through the day. Additional isolated SHRA/TSRA development is also possible late morning through the early evening near and west of the I-35 corridor. Stratus is forecast to re-develop across the region late Saturday evening into early Sunday morning.
