New Aviation, Short Term

SHORT TERM
/NEW/ Update: Only minor edits were made to the morning forecast update. A swath of low clouds associated with low-level moisture wrapping around the northwestern periphery of Hurricane Francine has overspread much of Central Texas this morning. Chances for isolated to scattered tropical showers and storms will increase during the day, primarily along/east of the I-35 corridor. Brief, heavy downpours and occasional lightning strikes will be the main hazards. See the previous discussion below for more details.

Previous Discussion: /Through Thursday/

Now Hurricane Francine, currently entering the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, will make landfall along the Louisiana coastline Wednesday evening. Tropical moisture wrapping around the northwestern periphery of Francine will bring a swath of low clouds later tonight into Wednesday morning. Some patchy fog will be possible across portions of Central Texas for a few hours early Wednesday morning. Deep moisture along with support from a shortwave trough detached from the main circulation that will push Francine northeastward will lead to the development of scattered showers during the day Wednesday. Showers may extend as far west as the I-35 corridor with the best rain chances (40-60%) remaining east of a Bonham-Corsicana-Hearne line. ~250-750 J/kg MUCAPE will support a few isolated thunderstorms. Brief, heavy downpours and occasional lightning strikes will be the primary hazards. Isolated to scattered showers will persist into Wednesday evening before diminishing in coverage Wednesday night as Francine shifts off to the northeast.

Clouds and rainfall will produce a noticeable temperature gradient Wednesday afternoon with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s across East Texas and mid-80s to near 90 degrees elsewhere. We will need to monitor for patchy fog across portions of the region Thursday morning as dewpoints in the mid-60s remain settled over North and Central Texas. Mostly sunny skies and warming temperatures will return Thursday as mid-level ridging shifts overhead behind Francine.

LONG TERM
/Issued 403 AM CDT Wed Sep 11 2024/ /Thursday Night Onward/

Key Messages:

- Weekend temperatures will be well above normal for this time of the year.

- Confidence in a prolonged heatwave lasting through at least next weekend is increasing. Heat coupled with gusty southwesterly winds may contribute to a slight uptick in fire weather concerns mid to late next week.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Francine's influence will quickly be diminishing as we head into the weekend with the arrival of high pressure into the Southern Plains. This high pressure will translate into well above normal temperatures this weekend, especially on Saturday.

Highs on Saturday will be in the mid 90s to around 100 degrees across the entire region. A few factors that will contribute to the hot conditions will be the near record hot temperatures about 4,000 feet above us. Additionally, strong cyclogenesis along the Front Range in Colorado will turn our winds out of the southwest between 10 to 15 mph. With southwesterly winds in place, compressional warming as the parcel descends will add a few degrees to our afternoon temperatures. The combination of the hot temperatures and moisture in place will yield heat index values that approach 104 degrees.

Sunday is unlikely to be as hot as Saturday, however, temperatures will still be in the mid to upper 90s with heat index values up to 102 degrees.

Heading into next week, much of the guidance has backed off on a potential West Coast trough sending impulses into the Southern Plains. Instead, we'll likely have to contend with strong ridging, prolonging the duration of the well above normal temperatures. At this time, precipitation chances remain below 10% through next weekend.

AVIATION
/NEW/ /12Z TAFs/

MVFR cigs have pushed into Central Texas and will approach the D10 terminals in the next couple of hours. These MVFR cigs will hang around through the morning lifting to VFR status by midday. We will start a period of VCSH at 16Z for the D10 sites and 18Z for KACT. There is a low chance for TSRA impacts at the terminals this afternoon, but a VCTS mention will be excluded from the TAFs at this moment. Rain chances will diminish and shift to the east later this evening as Hurricane Francine makes landfall along the Louisiana coastline and shifts northeastward.
