KEY MESSAGES
* Gusty winds and critical fire weather conditions will continue through this afternoon over most of the region.
* Breezy conditions are possible during the second half of the work week.
* Dry conditions will continue through next week, with temperatures gradually returning to normal by next weekend.
DISCUSSION
through July 4th.
The upper-level trough that brought the gusty winds yesterday will continue to push through the region this afternoon. Widespread wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph are expected once again today, with the strongest winds occurring from the western Mojave Desert through southern Nevada and into northwest Arizona. A Wind Advisory remains in effect through late tonight for a large portion of the region and was extended earlier this morning to include the southern Owens Valley as well. Expect difficult driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles; localized blowing dust near dry lakebeds across the Mojave Desert; and dangerous boating conditions on area lakes. In addition to these impacts, the gusty winds, combined with low relative humidity values and dry fuels, will support rapid fire growth and critical fire weather conditions across much of southeastern California, southern Nevada, and northwestern Arizona today. Please see the FIRE WEATHER discussion below for more details.
An uptick in southwesterly winds during the second half of the workweek is possible as a weaker cutoff low pressure system moves through the Pacific Northwest, tightening pressure gradients across the Great Basin. Confidence in the timing and strength of this system is still low, but Thursday currently appears to be the breeziest day, with winds of 15 to 25 mph possible in favored wind belt areas. Moisture levels associated with this system will be very limited, so dry weather is likely to continue through the July 4th weekend.
As we head into the new week, winds will diminish, but troughing and below-normal 500 mb heights will persist across the region through much of the week. These lower heights will keep temperatures around 8 to 12 degrees below normal on Sunday. As the trough weakens and lifts northeast, high pressure will gradually build into the area, allowing heights to rise and temperatures to return to near normal by the holiday weekend.
AVIATION

For the 18Z Forecast Package
Gusty south-southwest winds continue through today and tonight. Strongest gusts this afternoon and evening at 30-40 knots. Winds gradually weaken overnight and are expected to turn northerly Sunday morning.
Exact timing and magnitude of these north winds is a little uncertain. Most guidance brings them in between 14-16z with speeds 8- 15 knots. How long the north winds stick around Sunday is also uncertain, with variable or southwest winds returning between 18z- 21z. Temps remain below 100F.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California
For the 18Z Forecast Package
Strong southerly to westerly winds resume today across the region with widespread gusts of 25-40 knots. Moderate to severe turbulence is likely downstream of the higher terrain, with patchy blowing dust possible across the Mojave Desert. Winds gradually weaken overnight in most locations while a northerly shift advances through most of southern Nevada and Inyo County. VFR conditions under few to scattered high clouds.
FIRE WEATHER
Relative humidities will bottom out in the 5 to 15 percent range for much of the area this afternoon. Winds will favor a southerly to southwesterly direction across the region, with sustained speeds around 20 to 30 mph and gusts in the 35 to 50 mph range. Fire weather conditions in Lincoln County remain especially concerning, as locally extreme conditions may result in rapid rates of spread on existing wildfires. Given this combination of low humidity, strong winds, and dry fuels, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect into this evening. Critical fire weather conditions will linger into Sunday in Mohave County, with breezy conditions persisting and minimum relative humidity values remaining in the 5 to 15 percent range. As a result, the Red Flag Warning has been extended through Sunday evening for this area. Lighter winds are expected Monday through Wednesday, but an increase in winds late in the week may require additional Fire Weather products.
SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT
Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures.
