KEY MESSAGES
* The warming trend and periods of breezy winds will continue through the weekend.
* Cooler conditions and gusty winds will return next week with increased chances for shower activity across the Sierra and Great Basin.
DISCUSSION
through next week.
One more weak shortwave will drop south out of the eastern Great Basin and into northern Arizona today. This feature is weak and will have little consequence on our regional weather besides an enhancement of northerly winds, especially down the Colorado River Valley, through the evening hours. Otherwise, temperatures will continue to slowly climb today and Saturday as a transient high pressure ridge builds into the Southwest. This will allow temperatures to top out a few degrees above normal today, and climb a few more degrees Saturday.
By Sunday, a deep cut-off low off the California coast will begin to approach the region. This will induce an increasing southwesterly flow aloft, and afternoon winds will become gusty especially across our western and southern zones. Heights will begin to fall through the day Sunday but the enhanced mixing will most likely compensate, resulting in one more warm day before a more substancial cooling follows for Monday and Tuesday as the low creeps inland. Precipitation chances continue to favor the Sierra and southern Great Basin on Monday and Tuesday, though a few instability driven showers are possible further south Tuesday and Wednesday as the cold core aloft moves through the deserts.
Temperatures will drop sharply as the low moves through the region, with afternoon highs topping out a few degrees below normal. High pressure will slowly build back into the region mid- late week though the weather pattern looks to remain active as we finish the first week of May.
AVIATION
For Harry Reid
For the 06Z Forecast Package
Northeasterly winds are expected turn northwesterly overnight but likely (75% chance) remain below 10 knots. There is a 25% chance that northeast breezes continue through the night. Regardless, northeast breezes resume Friday morning with speeds 8-10 knots and gusts 14-18 knots. Winds weaken and turn westerly after sunset. Few to scattered clouds at or above 12kft.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California
For the 06Z Forecast Package
Light winds tonight give way to breezy north-northeast winds across most of the region on Friday. Strongest winds in the lower Colorado River Valley where gusts 20-30 knots are likely (80%). Winds will weaken around sunset.
Cloud bases remain at or above 10kft.
SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT
Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures.
