Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 932 AM PST Thu Jan 23 2020

SYNOPSIS. Mainly dry weather conditions along with a gradual warming trend is expected through Friday. A weak storm system moving into Northern California will bring a chance of precipitation to the region this upcoming weekend.

DISCUSSION. as of 9:24 AM PST Thursday . Satellite imagery shows a lot of high clouds streaming over the state at this time, but even so, current temperature readings are running several degrees cooler than at yesterday at this time. Temps are ranging from the lower 40s to around 50 at area airports. Current observations also only indicate a few sites picking up patchy fog. Livermore is reporting 6 miles in patchy fog. On tap for today and Friday, filtered sunshine and mild high temps ranging from the upper 50s to mid 60s.

High pressure aloft will dominate the weather pattern over the next couple of days. The tail end of a weak system could touch off some showers across far northern Sonoma County tonight, but not much precipitation is expected. The upper level ridge will rebuild Friday into Saturday. Saturday will be another mild day across the Bay Area.

Rain chances will return over the weekend as a slightly stronger frontal boundary moves through the region. Rain chances initially begin across the North Bay on Saturday, before slowly moving southward by Sunday. Forecast rainfall amounts will generally be a few hundredths to possibly three quarters of an inch in the North Bay. Daytime temperatures will lower from Saturday to Sunday with upper 50s to lower 60s.

By early next week a ridge will rebuild over the west shunting the storm track farther north again resulting in a mostly dry forecast for our area. The tail end of a few storms may bring low end rain chances to the extreme northern part of the North Bay at times next week, but that is all.

AVIATION. as of 9:32 AM PST Thursday . For 18Z TAFs. Mid and high clouds continue to stream over the San Francisco Bay Area this morning, which helped limit the fog development compared to 24 hours ago. VFR conditions are forecast to prevail today with the passing SCT/BKN/OVC high clouds. These high cloud bases are expected to gradually lower over the next 12 to 24 hours as northern California will be on the southern extent of a system targeting the Pacific Northwest. Could see some MVFR/IFR ceilings (and possibly visibilities) by daybreak Friday along with the slight chance of showers from SFO north. Winds are forecast to be relatively light.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR conditions are forecast to prevail today. Light easterly winds this morning will become west/northwest late in the day. Increasing mid/high clouds will stream over the area today with cloud bases gradually lowering through the afternoon and overnight.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . VFR conditions are forecast to prevail today at MRY and SNS. Offshore winds this morning will reverse and become onshore this afternoon. While communication problems persist with the SNS ASOS, the ASOS is still continuing to make observations.

MARINE. as of 8:32 AM PST Thursday . Winds will generally be offshore and locally breezy near coastal gaps this afternoon. A long period WNW swell will begin to move into the waters later today, peaking on Friday and Saturday. A coastal jet with northerly winds will develop along the Big Sur coast by Friday afternoon, generating small craft advisory winds there. The next storm approaches later Saturday into Sunday with increasing southerly winds followed by another large northwest swell behind the front Sunday into Monday.

MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Tday. NONE.
