Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 245 AM PST Fri Dec 1 2023

Synopsis
Precipitation chances linger into the early weekend. Quieter weather and a gradual warming trend expected early next week.

Discussion
Other than a few flurries lingering near the northern Sierra crest, precipitation has ended as the quick moving system has moved through early this morning. Caltrans traffic cameras indicated several inches of snowfall accumulated across the higher elevations since Thursday evening resulting in chain controls over the higher passes. Despite snowfall ending, travel impacts may continue into this morning.

Elsewhere, skies are clear to partly cloudy with some patches of fog along the eastern edge of the Central Valley. Current temps are in the mid 30s to mid 40s across the Central Valley, with mainly 20s to mid 30s over the mountains.

NorCal will remain under northwesterly flow aloft between deeper troughing to our east and ridging over the eastern Pacific into the weekend. We'll be on the periphery of stronger short-waves passing well to the north of the region. The next batch of light precipitation is forecast to develop over the mountains and far north end of the Sacramento Valley this afternoon and evening. QPF is forecast to be less than this morning's exiting system with only around a 15-30% chance of 2" of snowfall over the higher elevations.

A second batch of light precipitation (mainly over the mountains)
is forecast to move in Saturday and Saturday night, but minimal impacts are expected.

Behind that, upper level ridging builds in Sunday and Monday resulting in a gradual warming trend and pushing precipitation chances further to the north.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Tuesday THROUGH Friday)...
Dry and mild weather forecast into early next week under ridging.
Clusters show a majority of ensemble members indicate the ridge will shift east by mid-week allowing some light warm-advection precipitation to develop over the northern half of the forecast area ahead of the approaching late-week trough. However, about a third of the members maintain ridging (and dry weather) through Wednesday. Precipitation chances will likely be increasing across the region late next week, but clusters indicate quite a bit of uncertainty on the strength and timing of the incoming trough on Thursday and Friday, so confidence is low on any details at this point.

AVIATION
VFR conditions are expected to continue for the next 24 hours except widespread MVFR/IFR over the northern Sierra with snow showers this morning through Saturday. Light rain possible this morning near KRDD and KRBL through 18Z. Chances for MVFR haze near KSAC with fog possible along the eastern side of the Central Valley through 18Z. Surface wind gusts generally below 12 kts.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
None.
