AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Albany NY 1029 PM EDT Thu Sep 12 2024

SYNOPSIS
High pressure will support a stretch of dry and mostly sunny conditions through at least the upcoming weekend with temperatures trending above normal.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/

UPDATE
As of 1025 PM EDT, patchy mid level clouds across portions of Capital Region and southern VT/Berkshires continuing to track east/southeast, in association with weak shortwave passing just north of region. Some additional mid level clouds may graze portions of the southern Adirondacks over the next few hours.

Otherwise, where skies remain clear, temps have already dropped into the 50s, with 60s remaining in areas where mid level clouds were more numerous.

Overall clearing expected to continue overnight, with patchy river valley fog developing, especially across the upper Hudson Valley and Mohawk Valley regions, where locally dense fog is possible.

Low temps may drop into the mid/upper 40s across portions of the southern Adirondacks and upper Hudson Valley, with some upper 40s/lower 50s possible across portions of the Berkshires. Mainly mid/upper 50s elsewhere.

[PREVIOUS 345 PM EDT]...A few showers in far northern areas along a weak low level convergence boundary, supported by a very weak upper impulse seen in satellite imagery. Those showers will end around or shortly before sunset.

Otherwise, clear to mostly clear tonight as deep subsidence associated with low level and upper level ridging in place. Calm winds and slowly rising low level dew points will promote patchy dense fog around rivers, swamps lakes and wet lands. Lows in the 50s with around 50 northern areas.

SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY/
Any fog burns off quickly and it will be sunny Friday. A very isolated shower cannot be ruled out in the southern Adirondacks, Lake George Saratoga Region to southern VT with the leftover weak low level boundary currently in northern areas and weak upper impulse in the northern periphery of the upper ridging but too low a probability to include in the forecast. Highs Friday in the mid 70s to lower 80s.

More patchy dense fog Friday night, the sunny again Saturday.
Another chance for a very isolated shower Saturday afternoon, more toward southern VT to Berkshires to eastern Catskills and Litchfield Hills but again, too isolated for a mention in the forecast. Highs Saturday in the mid 70s to lower 80s with a few mid 80s in warmer spots.

After another round of patchy dense fog Saturday night, sunny on Sunday and the center of the upper ridging will be overhead, so weak upper energy will have built far enough east and south so that there should not be any isolated showers. Highs Sunday, again, in the mid 70s to lower 80s with a few mid 80s in warmer spots.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/
Dry and tranquil weather continues through much of next week.
There are hints of upper energy and moisture possibly drifting north and east from the SE U.S. toward southern parts of our region. However, strong upper ridging will still be proximate to our region and the strength of the upper ridging will determine if any spotty showers could get into perhaps the eastern Catskills, mid Hudson Valley and Litchfield Hills. The probability for showers is too low this far out in time, so again, dry weather and continued warmer than normal temperatures.

Highs Monday and Tuesday in the upper 70s to mid 80s with a little cooler in higher terrain. Highs Wednesday just a couple of degrees cooler as upper ridging weakens just a bit and potentially shifts back west as some troughing potentially develops in eastern Canada, pushing a slight cooldown south and west into our region. Highs Thursday possibly another degree or two cooler but still in the 70s to around 80.

AVIATION /03Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/
Through 00Z/Saturday...VFR conditions will prevail early this evening until later tonight, when fog development is expected.
Until then, some patchy mid level clouds will drift across KGFL, KALB and KPSF through early evening.

Later this evening, skies should be clear with light to calm wind, so radiation fog will likely develop at typical spots KGFL/KPSF with occasional MVFR/IFR conditions, especially between roughly 06Z-10Z/Fri. Lower confidence in fog potential at KALB/KPOU, so will just mention 5-6SM BR late tonight with BCFG at KALB similar to what occurred this morning. After any fog dissipates by 12z-13z Friday, VFR conditions will return with mainly sunny skies expected.

Winds will trend to calm overnight, then will become southwest to west Friday morning at 4-8 KT, possibly becoming northwest to north at KGFL and KALB in the afternoon.

Outlook...

Saturday: No Operational Impact. NO SIG WX.
