Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion
KEY MESSAGES
- Scattered showers and storms return this afternoon in Central GA, and then across North and Central GA on Friday afternoon.
- Heat concerns will increase through this weekend into next week with high temps climbing into the 90s and heat index values over 100 across much of the area from Sunday on.
- Coverage of afternoon showers and storms will be isolated over the weekend into next week.
SHORT TERM
(This afternoon through Friday)
Issued at 215 PM EDT Thu Jun 25 2026
A weak low center moving east across central/south GA with showers and isolated thunderstorms rotating around this afternoon.
These storms should stay mainly across the MCN and CSG areas and southward as this wave will move slowly east then NE across SC Friday. There will still be some residual moisture across the area Fri so expecting another round of showers and isolated thunderstorms across east and central GA. Our next best chance for some storms will be Sat as the models are showing a wave moving SE out of TN across North and East GA Sat/Sat night. A weak wedge does build into NE GA ahead of this wave and the wave does weaken as it pushes across the Appalachian ridge into the region. We are currently under a Marginal risk area for portions of North and East GA Sat. Temps will continue to warm into the weekend with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s expected through Sat.
LONG TERM
(Saturday morning through next Wednesday)
Issued at 215 PM EDT Thu Jun 25 2026
A few lingering showers and thunderstorms will be possible late Saturday into early Sunday morning as a weak disturbance passes through the area. PoPs will be highest across northern locations.
Moving into the later part of the weekend and into early next week, a H500 ridge will center itself just west of the state over MS/LA.
Given the strong ridge of high pressure, calm and dry conditions are expected through much of the period. With that said, dangerously hot temperatures and heat index values are expected.
Some low end PoPs are possible underneath this ridge but the main hazard will be the hot and humid conditions leading to dangerous heat index values this weekend and into early next week.
Temperatures are expected to be above average. Max heat index values will likely get into the upper 90s to just over 100 degrees across much of the state by late this weekend and continuing into early next week.
AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 141 PM EDT Thu Jun 25 2026 VFR ceilings with some showers across the MCN and CSG areas.
Have not seen any thunderstorms yet but they should get going in the next few hours as the low center track across south GA. Not expecting any of these storms to move northward into the ATL or AHN areas. Expecting precip to diminish shortly after sunset with another round of storms popping up Fri afternoon across the entire area. Ceilings should stay VFR through the period except in and around any convective activity. Winds are variable out of the SE to SW this afternoon but they should turn more SWLY overnight and into Friday. Wind speeds will stay in the 3-7kt range with some gust in and around convective storms.
