DISCUSSION
Another chilly morning occurred yesterday, and current temperatures remain similar to this time during last night.
Minimum temperatures Tuesday morning were generally in the lower to mid-30's across the Central Valley. Expect similar temperatures this morning with a warming trend over the next couple of days, and chances for freezing temperatures today are anywhere from 45 to 90 percent throughout the Central Valley. As the airmass remains dry, we don't anticipate the development of widespread dense fog. As for freezing overnight temperatures into later this week, the chances for Thursday morning lower to around 30 to 50 percent, though mainly for southern portions of the SJ Valley (generally Central portions of Kings/Tulare Counties into Kern County). So, for Thursday morning in the south valley, freezing temperatures remain moderately probable.
For now, will hold off on issuance of additional freeze highlights. Meanwhile, an upper-level disturbance will continue to bring easterly winds to portions of Kern County through this evening, with the strongest gusts over the Mojave Desert slopes where a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM PST this evening. The probability of 45 mph gusts for this particular area is about 25 to 60 percent, with the best chances during later this morning.
On Thursday the upper-level disturbance shifts to mainly Southern CA with ridging building along the coast for Friday into next weekend. Some easterly winds over Kern County remain possible, though not as strong. Temperatures are projected to moderate during this period, although chances for freezing overnight lows in the south valley lower slightly and remain steady, or at about 20-40 percent.
Another dry cold front will pass from the E Pacific into the region later this weekend. In its wake, cold, dry air will be reinforced that results in another period with freezing overnight low temperatures in the SJ Valley. The probabilities of lows of 32 degrees or colder trend upward this weekend until at least early next week, with chances rising to 40 to 70 percent throughout the SJ Valley. Similar chances linger in the middle of next week. In addition, another period of gusty winds is possible in the Kern County desert by early next week.
The latest 8-14 day CPC (Climate Prediction Center) outlooks show a slight tilt (33-40 percent) towards below average precipitation and above average temperatures. The 6-10 day outlook shows chances of below average precipitation at around 40-45 percent with a slight tilt towards above average temperatures.
