AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Charleston WV 803 PM EST Tue Dec 9 2025
SYNOPSIS
Dry weather this evening. A cold front Wednesday, with upslope snow behind the front. A clipper Friday with mainly snow.
Another system over the weekend brings in arctic air.
NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/
As of 715 PM Tuesday...
The forecast is on track, other than to evince that at least some lowland locations will not drop below freezing tonight in the first place.
As of 115 PM Tuesday...
A high pressure system will move off to the east as a cold front approaches from the west tonight. Southerly winds will increase overnight, causing temperatures in the lowlands to rise later tonight above freezing. This will provide dry weather during the evening hours, with some rain arriving from the west later tonight.
SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY/
As of 125 PM Tuesday...
A cold front will move across the area on Wednesday. Some rain can be expected in advance of the front for most areas, while higher elevations of the West Virginia mountains will see snow.
With the strong winds and snow, a Blizzard Warning has been issued for the higher elevations of the northern West Virginia mountains starting at 10 AM Wednesday. There could be a break from blizzard conditions Wednesday afternoon.
Colder air behind the cold front will cause an upslope snow event from late Wednesday into Thursday. This will cause the blizzard conditions to set back in for the higher elevations of the West Virgina northern mountains. These conditions should continue into Thursday morning, when the upslope snow begins to taper off.
LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/
As of 135 PM Tuesday...
A strong clipper will effect the area Thursday night into Friday, providing wintry weather. This system has the potential to create a messy commute for Friday morning.
Yet another system can be expected for Saturday or Sunday.
Models vary on the details of this system however, including the intensity of the colder air moving into the region behind the system on Sunday.
A high pressure system will then build across the area for Monday.
AVIATION /01Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/
As of 715 PM Tuesday...Corrected
After a VFR night tonight, a cold front will crosses the area on Wednesday, bringing a morning/midday and then late afternoon round of MVFR rain showers, although MVFR ceilings should not materialize until after the first round of showers rolls through. Snow will at least mix in with the rain in the mountains with the second, late afternoon round.
South to southwest low level flow tonight, gusty at times, will strengthen and become southwest after daybreak 1Wednesday morning, with gusts into the 25 to 30 kt range at times throughout the day. Moderate southwest flow aloft tonight will become strong southwest Wednesday morning, and then moderate west Saturday afternoon. The low level flow, along with increasing clouds, will prevent fog formation tonight, but may also result in low level wind shear until higher gusts mix down to the surface tonight.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND ALTERNATE SCENARIOS THROUGH 00Z THURSDAY...

ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Timing of flight category changes on Wednesday could vary. Gusty winds will fluctuate.
