Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hanford CA 345 AM PST Tue Dec 5 2023
SYNOPSIS
A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for the San Joaquin Valley, north of Kern County until 11 AM this morning. A warming trend will continue with record highs possible across parts of the San Joaquin Valley on Wednesday afternoon. A disturbance will bring a chance for light precipitation on Wednesday, mainly around Yosemite NP. A cooling trend will lower temperatures to near normal by Friday.
DISCUSSION
An amplified upper ridge remains over the west with satellite loops showing clear skies over the central California interior.
Some mist and haze has reduced visibilities a little across the San Joaquin Valley. High resolution guidance is continuing to indicate the potential for some dense fog to develop as we move through the morning. The area of concern stretches from Merced south to near Corcoran, generally along and west of Highway 99.
Guidance is showing fog to be less likely on Wednesday morning.
High temperatures were a little above normal on Monday and will continue to trend warmer under the ridge. Highs this afternoon are forecast to be around 7 to 10 degrees above normal for this time of the year. By Wednesday, high temperatures will be around 15 degrees above normal. Some record highs may be tied or broken across the SJ Valley on Wednesday. There is also a chance for light precipitation on Wednesday, mainly around Yosemite NP, as an upper trough passes over northern California. Rainfall will generally be less than one tenth of an inch but conceivably may reach as much as one quarter of an inch. Snowfall up to 2 inches is conceivable above 8000 feet.
East Pacific ridging builds in this weekend with a cold air mass in place. Rural areas of the San Joaquin Valley could reach the freezing mark on Saturday morning. Blended guidance is giving these areas a 70 to 95 percent chance of having a low temperature of 32 degrees or below on Saturday morning. The potential remains on Sunday morning but probabilities decrease to around 40 to 60 percent.
AVIATION
Areas of MVFR in mist/haze with local IFR/LIFR in fog across the San Joaquin Valley until 19Z Tuesday. VFR conditions will prevail elsewhere across Central California for the next 24 hours.
AIR QUALITY ISSUES
On Tuesday December 5 2023, Fireplace/Wood Stove Burning Status is: No Burning Unless Registered in Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, and Tulare Counties. Burning Discouraged in Merced County, and Kern (Greater Frazier Park Area) and Sequoia National Park and Forest.
