KEY MESSAGES
* A minor dip in temperatures today will lead us into a prolonged period of triple digit heat across western Nevada valleys through next weekend.
* Current active fires producing areas of haze and smoke bring periods of reduced air quality for northeastern California and northwestern Nevada.
* Typical afternoon winds will bring short periods of isolated elevated fire weather concerns.
DISCUSSION
Today's high temperatures will be nudged downward from recent 100s across western Nevada valleys, with upper 90s replacing the 100s for today. Sierra communities will still be in the 90s as well. Then, the heat comes back in force for the remainder of the week into next weekend. Triple digits will surge back onto the map and remain in place at least through Saturday for the Basin and Range and the Sierra Front. For Wednesday, a Heat Advisory has been issued, and an Extreme heat Watch for Thursday through Sunday morning. The overnight lows will range between 60 and 70 degrees, which will offer little to no relief in overnight cooling. Make sure to follow heat safety advice this week, it will be a hot one.
Typical afternoon breezes return today, with smoke and haze lofting into the region from fires burning across the Intermountain West.
Periods of degraded air quality will be present at least through Tuesday, depending on fire behavior. With the afternoon gusts ranging 15-20 mph there may be periods of elevated fire weather concerns.
The weekend may be our first opportunity to see showers arriving from the monsoonal flow, but chances remain less than 10% for now.
Looking into the next week, signals of 10-15% chances start to appear for Mono and Mineral counties. HRICH
