Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 1242 PM MDT Sat Jun 27 2026

KEY MESSAGES, Issued 1104 AM MDT Sat Jun 27 2026

- Widespread and significant critical fire weather conditions will continue through Saturday across areas south of I-80 through this evening, with southwest winds gusting to 50 mph and RH remaining below 15 percent.

- Strong thunderstorms are expected across northern Utah and far southwest Wyoming this afternoon. These storms may be accompanied by hail, strong winds in excess of 50 mph, and heavy rain.

- A strong cold front will cross northern and central Utah this afternoon through tonight. Much cooler temperatures will follow the front, with daytime highs Sunday running 20 to 25 degrees below normal over northern Utah and 10 to 15 degrees below normal over central and southwest Utah.

- High pressure will bring warming trend through the upcoming week, with hot and dry conditions returning by mid-week.
Increasing southwest winds will bring critical fire weather conditions across much of the area Thursday and Friday.

DISCUSSION, Issued 1104 AM MDT Sat Jun 27 2026

Another very active day ongoing across the forecast area, with last evening's frontal boundary serving as a demarcation between a very dry and windy airmass across central/southern Utah, and a cooler but more unstable airmass across the north. RH recovery across central Utah was non-existent overnight as values remained below 15 percent, which allowed area fires to remain active...particularly the Wild Goose fire impacting areas near Scipio.

A shortwave trough currently rotating through northern Nevada will spread over northern Utah by early afternoon. Large scale forcing associated with this trough working on a modestly unstable airmass will support scattered convection mainly north of I-80.
Deep layer shear supports storm organization and may see a few instances of large hail in addition to lightning and heavy rain.
The much anticipated cold front associated with this trough will begin pushing into northern Utah this afternoon, ushering much cooler air into the region.

Further south, southwest winds are beginning to ramp up once again, with gusts approaching 50 mph this afternoon and evening ahead of the approaching frontal boundary. This combined with the aforementioned very dry airmass will maintain significant critical fire weather conditions through most of the day, until the front crosses central Utah later this evening.

Much cooler air will settle into the region Sunday, with max temps remaining in the 60s across northern valleys including the Wasatch front, and low-mid 70s across central and southwest Utah. These highs will run 20-25 degrees below normal across the north, and 10-15 degrees below normal across southwest Utah. The airmass further south and east will remain very dry over the Swell, Canyonlands and eastern Grand Staircase, where a Red Flag Warning will remain in effect through Sunday evening.

An upper trough will remain in place across the region but gradually fill through midweek allowing the airmass to quickly modify. This will result in a warming trend with afternoon temperatures returning to near climo by Wednesday. Strengthening southwest flow during the latter half of the week will bring a return to hot, dry and breezy conditions.

AVIATION, Issued 1104 AM MDT Sat Jun 27 2026

KSLC...VFR conditions are forecast to prevail through the period amidst gusty winds which are forecast to taper off around 04z. A chance for thunderstorms exists this afternoon near the terminal, though southern extent of the storms remains uncertain at this time.
If one does form near the terminal, severe gusts and hail with frequent lightning and heavy rain are all possible.

REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING... VFR conditions are forecast to persist across all TAF sites through the period amidst gusty winds.
For KLGU, KOGD, KEVW, and KSVR, isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms will develop this afternoon capable of severe winds and hail as well as frequent lightning and heavy rainfall. The southern extent remains uncertain, with the highest certainty of impacts this afternoon occurring at KLGU.

FIRE WEATHER
Widespread and significant critical fire weather conditions will continue today across central and southern Utah, as strong southwest winds once again gust near 50 mph. With an approaching cold front, these winds may gust a little stronger than what was observed Friday across central and southern Utah.
A wedge of very dry air remains across central and eastern Utah as well, with RH values below 10 percent across these areas, while RH values have trended slightly higher across southern Utah, and will bottom out closer to 10-15 percent this afternoon. These critical fire weather conditions will persist through this evening, until a strong cold front crosses central and southwest Utah late this evening into the overnight hours, accompanied by a wind shift to the northwest, and much cooler temperatures.

Across northern Utah, moisture has spread into areas north of I-80 allowing for much higher RH today along with showers and thunderstorms. These storms will wind down by early evening as a much cooler and more stable airmass spreads into the region.
Temperatures Sunday will run 20-25 degrees below normal across northern Utah, and 10-15 degrees below normal across central and southwest Utah.

A warm and dry airmass will remain across south central into east central Utah Sunday, and combined with gusty northwest winds will bring another day of critical fire weather conditions across the eastern valleys. Drier air spreading into southwest Utah along with gusty winds will allow for elevated fire weather conditions across zone 495 during the afternoon hours, but the threat should remain marginal/isolated enough to not warrant any fire weather headlines.

A warming and drying trend will follow across the region through the upcoming week, with temperatures returning to near normal by Wednesday. Strengthening southwest flow during the latter half of the week, coupled with an increasingly hot and dry airmass will likely bring a return to widespread critical fire weather conditions Thursday and Friday.
