AVIATION

Expansive area of high pressure in control throughout the great lakes maintains benign conditions through the upcoming holiday.
Clear skies will prevail outside of occasional patches of cirrus during this time. Light winds generally from the northeast will exist tonight, with only a modest increase in speed with daytime heating. Inland penetration of the late day lake breeze may offer a brief wind shift to the southeast at DTW/YIP.

DTW THRESHOLD PROBABILITIES...

* None.

DISCUSSION...

Persistence forecasting will carry us through the remainder of the Holiday weekend and into next week as blocking pattern holds across the conus keeping upper level ridge locked over the Great Lakes.
High pressure will also be in control at the surface although the present high has been weakening but will be replaced/reinforced by another high currently dropping south to Quebec from James Bay.
Airmass remains very dry the next few days with most of the moisture holding in the upper levels as cirrus debris clouds shed off the stacked, slow moving low over the coast of the Carolinas.

Flow turning more easterly tomorrow with the new high settling southward should shunt the cirrus off to the west bringing clearing skies for Memorial Day. This and airmass modification will allow temps to climb a few more degrees tomorrow from around 80 today, into the low to mid 80s tomorrow. Additional warm advection through mid week as the upper level ridge axis passes just to the east allowing flow to turn more southerly and warmer air to fold into the region. 850mb temps will rise from the low teens C into the mid- upper teens which will boost high temps even more into the mid to upper 80s. 90s remain in play for later in the week but that will depend on strength of the easterly surface flow off the lakes and any cu field that can develop. A backdoor cold front will attempt to push into the region Friday which would knock temps down a few degrees, but currently models are sticking with the mid 80s for the coming weekend.

There is no real shot at rain in the next week. Models try to start touching off a few diurnal showers each afternoon starting Wednesday but airmass is so dry and they are already running too high with available moisture. This morning models runs were largely showing PWATS up around 0.6 to 0.7 inches but the 12Z sounding came in with 0.44. So we'll keep a dry forecast and adjust as needed later in the week.

MARINE...

Strong high pressure will remain in place across the central Great Lakes into the early week period. Dry weather and light and variable winds generally under 10 knots will lead to favorable marine conditions during this time. Favorable marine conditions will continue into the middle of the week as the high pressure gradually weakens and shifts eastward towards New England. Winds will eventually emerge out of the south during the middle of the week but still remain light to moderate in nature.
