KEY MESSAGES

- Breezy southwesterly winds will continue through late tonight, with gales over the south half of the open waters of Lake Michigan.

SHORT TERM
Issued 257 PM CST Sat Dec 7 2024

Tonight through Sunday night:

Temperatures this afternoon rose to near and just above 50 degrees in southwestern and far southern Wisconsin today so far, with another hour or so of sunlight and southwesterly winds to nudge temperatures a few degrees higher in south-central to southwestern Wisconsin. Areas north of Milwaukee remain in the mid-40s, with cloud cover and lighter winds keeping things on the cooler side. With lighter southerly winds continuing on Sunday, bumped temperatures up a few degrees to the middle and upper 40s across southern Wisconsin in the afternoon hours. May still see these highs increase farther if trends continue.
Notably, the NAM suite seems to be 5-10 degrees too cold in its solutions, which is impacting ensemble blends that contain those members.

Dry conditions continue through tonight into Sunday, with chances (10-20%, with the highest chances in the east) for drizzle developing Sunday evening as low level moisture works in from the southeast ahead of a low pressure system propagating southeastward into the Great Lakes Region by Monday morning.
Lows between 32 and 37 degrees are expected, with the highest temperatures in the same regions as the highest chances for drizzle, keeping slippery spot concerns at a minimum going into Monday morning.

LONG TERM
Issued 257 PM CST Sat Dec 7 2024

Monday through Saturday:

Low pressure spins northeastward through the northern Great Lakes into James Bay Monday into Tuesday, with northwesterly surface flow becoming prominent Monday night into Tuesday morning and leading to temperatures falling back into the 20s and teens. As the low occludes and produces wrap-around precipitation, expecting snow showers and flurries to develop Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday night (10-25% chance). High pressure regains prominence going into Thursday, allowing for clearing skies and lighter winds through Friday before the next system progresses eastward into Wisconsin Saturday.

AVIATION
Issued 257 PM CST Sat Dec 7 2024

VFR conditions continue through Sunday, with southwesterly winds continuing to gust between 25 and 30 kt through this evening.
Winds will diminish late tonight, shifting to become southerly to southeasterly into Sunday afternoon. A layer of low-level moisture (between 500 and 2000 ft) moves in Sunday night, leading to lowering ceilings and drizzle potential overnight.

MARINE
Issued 257 PM CST Sat Dec 7 2024

High pressure will remain over the Gulf Coast states through tonight, while low pressure currently over eastern Lake Superior lifts into southeastern Ontario overnight into Sunday morning. Gusty southwest winds will continue through late tonight, with isolated gales possible in the northern half, and gales of 35 to 40 kt expected in the southern half. A Gale Warning is in effect through tonight across the southern half through late tonight. Meanwhile, nearshore regions of southern Wisconsin will see gusts up to 30 kt. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through late tonight for gusty southwest winds.

Winds become light into Sunday morning, then shift to become southerly in the afternoon hours as low pressure approaches from the northern High Plains. Low pressure will then move across Lake Superior on Monday, bringing a cold front and westerly breezes across Lake Michigan. Winds then shift to brisk and northwesterly for Tuesday and Wednesday.
