Forecast discussion for routine morning forecast issuance
SHORT TERM
Today
Tonight
and Tuesday Issued at 253 AM CST Mon Dec 4 2023
Key Messages:
- A clipper system may bring a dusting to an inch of snow to the area tonight into Tuesday. The highest amounts will be across central Wisconsin, with little to no snow across northeast Wisconsin.
Forecast Discussion:
A ridge of high pressure will provide dry weather to the region today with temperatures near seasonable levels for this time of year. Clouds today will be tricky with central Wisconsin expected to mainly be cloudy and breaks in the clouds due to downsloping across north-central and northeast Wisconsin as well as portions of east-central Wisconsin this morning. Clouds are expected to make their way back into the areas that clear out through the afternoon as the ridge heads east and winds turn west then southwest throughout the day. Highs today are expected to mainly be in the lower to middle 30s.
A clipper system will track southeast from the upper Mississippi Valley to northern Illinois late tonight, the continue east towards Ohio on Tuesday. The clipper will bring a swath of light snow and flurries to northern Wisconsin tonight into Tuesday morning, with lake effect snow developing across far north-central Wisconsin on Tuesday as winds turn north-northwesterly. Snowfall amounts from this system are expected to be very light, with a few tenths of an inch of snow generally expected. Amounts could get up to an inch across portions of central Wisconsin from this event with little to no snow across far northeast Wisconsin as the moisture and lift will be lacking across that area. Lows tonight are expected to mainly be in the 20s. Highs on Tuesday are expected to mainly be in the 30s.
LONG TERM
Tuesday Night Through Sunday Issued at 253 AM CST Mon Dec 4 2023
Key Messages:
- Mild and dry weather expected for most of the week.
- Potential light rain/snow system moving through next weekend.
Tuesday night through Friday morning...Upper-level ridging and surface high pressure centered over the southern CONUS should make for a mostly dry and mild mid-week stretch. The only chance for some light snow will be in far northern WI along the MI boarder early Wednesday morning as a left front jet quadrant moves over the area. The only other concern to note for this period is a tightening pressure gradient creating the potential for some SW winds gusting 25-30 mph late Wednesday night through Thursday morning which could blow unsecured holiday decorations out of yards.
Friday night through the end of the extended period... There has been a pretty wide range in model solutions surrounding a split flow regime that may set up over the central CONUS late this week and through the weekend. However, the most recent long-range models are showing there may be too much space between the northern stream and southern steams to get any phasing.
Currently, it looks like the souther stream may bring a strong low pressure system across the Ohio River Valley and as moisture wraps around the northern part of the system east-central and central WI may get some light rain turning to snow Saturday afternoon through Sunday as temperatures cool. With low forecast confidence for this system left NBM PoPs for this time period.
AVIATION
for 06Z TAF Issuance Issued at 958 PM CST Sun Dec 3 2023
Widely varying conditions were observed across the region late this evening, with a mix of VFR/MVFR ceilings, and patchy fog developing wherever partial clearing had occurred. As a result, lower than average forecast confidence is expected for the overnight period. In general, expect VFR conditions and partial clearing over northeast WI during the TAF period, with MVFR conditions more prevalent farther west. Patchy fog may result in brief periods of IFR/LIFR conditions in NC WI overnight into Monday morning.
